Photography is considered an important medium because moments are captured through photographs and are never able to be exactly replicated. The memories captured can be used to prove that events from the past actually happened. For example, some people deny that the Holocaust actually occurred, but photographs present the visual proof that cannot be disputed. Photographs are also taken for pleasure and to remember friends and family. Photographs also elicit a more emotional response from their audience than other mediums, such as text and audio. Through the use of text and audio, the audience can only create an image of the event in their mind. Photography allows them to actually view occurrence, which makes it more realistic and emotional for the audience. Stimulating multiple senses, such as vision and hearing, by including audio, will increase the impact of the photograph on its’ viewers. Photographing a moment documents an experience, provides proof of events, and triggers a more emotional response from the audience.
In terms of photography being used in the media, there are many practical reasons to explain why it is sometimes be preferred. Photographs are considered to be easier and faster to produce than other mediums, especially with the invention of digital cameras. The photograph can be viewed and released almost instantly. Also, subjects are more likely to be willing to be photographed than filmed. The subject has more control over the content of a photograph than a film. Using film allows the documentarian to change and distort the context more easily. Also in terms of photographing someone without permission, using a camera is less noticeable than a camcorder. Also since cameras are normally smaller and easier to focus, the photographer can be more furtive. In certain situations, the media prefers the use of cameras, which furthers the importance of the photograph.
